Fernando Alonso thinks today’s Formula 1 drivers are more prepared than ever before.
Despite being 43, Alonso competes at a high level against much younger drivers like Oliver Bearman and Franco Colapinto.
Bearman stepped in for Carlos Sainz at just 18 years old, with only one practice session at Jeddah before nearly reaching Q3. He scored points on his debut and again at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix for Haas. Meanwhile, Colapinto, at 21, replaced Logan Sargeant at Williams and made an immediate impact.
Alonso: ‘You have to perform at top level for ten months’
Alonso believes modern drivers are better trained than those from the past. He praises Bearman and Colapinto: “I think they did an incredible job, and credit to them. They are more prepared, yes. They do more simulator, yes. They do some TPC and some other testing, yes. But it’s not the same when you test and then when you race, and they had the pressure of the racing, and the street circuit and things like that, and they did an incredible job,” he said.
Fans might think it’s amazing how young drivers can handle such pressure so well.
“The championship is also 24 races long,” Alonso continued. “They need to perform at this top level for ten months, which is another challenge. But so far, they’ve been incredibly good, and this is good for the sport and the future.”
